초록

The modern criticism of Korea finds its identity in the process of awakening itself to verbal fetters, which the criticism of the preceding era had to live with, namely, in the process of overcoming old cultures and customs permeated with the style of Chinese classics. Baek, Chul and Choi, Jaeseo, who acquired Western studies, had in possession a basis on which to open a literary horizon that could lead to another phase by internalizing failures and achievements kept at a safety distance that the literary circle had gone through at the embryonic stage of the enlightenment. However, they shut themselves up in a functional modernism, where imports of the Western cultures and literature are seen as equivalent with achievements of modern literature, by making an extreme choice to the effect that there are no norms or traditions to abide by in Korea, a theory of departure from the tradition. In either case, the criticism is nothing short of another name for political conformism, and ends up as a means to realizing the desires of intellectuals in the colonial age.
