This study was conducted to clarify the relationship betwen embryo and endosperm weight and with sedling emer-gence rate in submerged soil at 18oC in germination chamber using 214 rice varieties of various origin from South and NorthKorea, IRI, China, and Nepal. A wide range of variation was observed in embryo weight among the rice varieties. The rangeswere 0.32~0.76 mg from S. Korea, 0.42~0.85 mg from N. Korea, and 0.16~0.77 from IRI, and the average embryo weights ineach group were 0.58 mg, 0.59 mg, and 0.42 mg, respectively. The lightest variety was IR42 as 0.16 mg and the heaviest one wasPyeongyang8 as 0.85 mg. In endosperm, the weight ranges were 14.71~30.78 mg in S. Korean varieties, 15.92~25.28 mg in N.Korean varieties, and 12.76~25.13 mg in IRI varieties with the average of 18.0 mg, 19.13 mg, and 18.38 mg, respectively. Thelightest variety was IR42 as 12.76 mg and heaviest one was Daeripbyeo 1 as 12.76 mg. Corelation coeficient betwen embryo andendosperm weight was 0.42**. Emergence failure was observed in the 59.8% of the tested varieties (Oryza sativa L.) under thecondition of submerged soil at 18oC. The average frequency distribution of the emergence coefficient was 2.9 in S. Korean variety,1.2 in N. Korean variety, and 0.3 in IRRI variety. Corelation coefficient between embryo weight and emergence was 0.30* underthe submerged soil condition at 18oC. This results may indicate that emergence in submerged soil condition at 18oC is regulated bysome factors related to early growth rate rather than embryo weight.
