Generating a stereoscopic image from a panning Monoscopic camera

This paper presents a method to generate a stereoscopic image from multiple images that are acquired from the translational panning of a camera. For this, we propose an efficient method being composed of affine transform and optimal image selection. We calculate a principal edge orientation as well as a translational vector. A cost function combining the two factors is used to select a pair of best-matched images. Subjective test performed on thirty-two image sets showed that the degree of visual fatigue is larger than 4.0, indicating that the stereoscopic images produced by the proposed method are stable and comfortable. © 2012 ICIC International.
