This study aims to introduce the methods of constituting ethics by modern poetry reader and to discuss the feasibility of practicing the methods in poetry classroom. The direction of constituting ethics in poetry reading can be furcated: One is to understand the request propounded by a poem as the other. The other is to grope for truth by making use of a poem. The former is related to the ethics of Lévinas, and the latter is related to the ethics of Badiou. And this study explores the feasibility of practicing these methods by analyzing the high school reader’s responses about “With burning thirst”. In case of the direction of facing the other, most readers actively understand the request propounded by the poem but some readers only try to analyze or explain the poem. And in case of the direction of groping for truth, most readers are not familiar with the direction but the significant possibility of thoughtful quest is found. On the basis of the above, this study suggests some points about constituting ethics in poetry classroom as follows: First, make the readers involve the evaluative statement in their response about a poem and explore the discourse at the bottom of the response. Second, activate diverse conversation in the classroom so that the reader’s horizon of ethical thought can be extended. Third, promote reader’s sensibility of ethics in the long term and offer relevant experiences.
