시장에서 광장으로: 동아시아의 발전주의적 경쟁을 넘어서

초록

This study examines the extent to which the visions of the ASEAN Community are reflected in the visions of an East Asian community for "peace, prosperity and progress." Contrary to the criticism that an East Asian community is an entirely unrealistic and deceptive 'delusion', it is a project of realistic and constructive 'imagination' in that it reasonably takes into account the profound aspirations of East Asian nations for sovereignty because of their historical experience of colonial domination. National sovereignty is neither omnipresent nor omnipotent in East Asia, nonetheless. The East Asian visions of regional solidarity in economic, security, and socio-cultural fields reflects the visions of the ASEAN Community, which are consistent with universal values of the international society such as human security and human development. In this regard the economic crisis of the late 1990s provided a crucial impetus to enlightened regional cooperation for sustainable development beyond blind national competition for accelerated growth. The ASEAN community will serve an East Asian community as the central strategic link, since it offers more credible visions and more reliable experiences than its Northeast Asian counterpart.
