초록

This study challenges a traditional English Literature class by engaging the concept of cultural democracy as a pedagogy. Cultural democracy respects plurality of cultures, creative activities, changes, and process. With all the great aspects that cultural democracy embraces, the class of American plays was restructured. In order to promote a student's self-directed reading and to make the plays close relevance to the student's life, there are several class activities developed such as creating poems after reading the newspaper articles, performing reader's theatre, making the wills, tracing the family trees, adding some lines to the poem, The Paradox of our Time, on Internet, and sharing the experiences of sexual discrimination. After analyzing the students' survey, I found that students, through the class activities, improved their understanding of the plays and enhanced the interests in a play. Furthermore, the result proved that the class activities helped the students discover the association between the plays and their lives.
