Applicability evaluation of Korean specifications for CWR Design to North Korea regions based on climatic statistics data

Recently, interest in modernization of railway infrastructures in North Korea has increased with increasing interest in connecting the railways between South and North Korea. It is necessary to install continuous welded rail (CWR) to increase the speed of trains after Initiating the Trans-Korean Railroad (TKR). The ambient air temperature is an important factor that affects the axial forces in CWR because it is directly related to the rail temperature. With increasing and decreasing ambient air temperature, the rail might buckle or fracture due to increased or decreased rail temperature, respectively. In South Korea, the rail temperature is managed to range from -20°C to 60°C. Thus, the middle temperature is 20°C. This rail temperature range is well operated in South Korea. However, it is doubtful this temperature criteria for CWR can be applicable to the North Korea region, since the ambient air temperature in North Korea is quite different from that in South Korea. In this study, climatic statistics data for 30 years on the Korea peninsula were analyzed and an ambient air temperature range that can be applicable for KR code was studied. Then, the temperature range was compared with that of North Korea to check the applicability of KR code to the North Korea region. © 2020 The Korean Society for Railway. A l l rights reserved.
