조벽암 시의 포즈와 근대 ― 월북 이전 시세계를 중심으로

The Pose and Modernity in Cho Pyuk-am's Poems Nam, Gi-taek Cho Pyuk-am's poetry deals mainly with modern lives and apparently reflects how he recognized tradition. Like any other colonial intellectuals, Cho took modernity as something very insecure. This partly explains why his poetic world is filled with tragic, mournful tones. The poetic self sings the gloom of the times in two contradictory voices of insecurity and longing. In light of the fact that Cho had faith in dialectic development, Cho's melancholy pose can be construed as his methodology with which to respond to reality poetically. Gloom becomes longing, which in turn supplies power for overcoming reality. Cho continued to write poems after he defected to North Korea. After the division of the Korean Peninsular, he kept enlarging his literary perspective and put it into practice, contributing to the continuation of literary history. These characteristics can be seen as what his poetry achieved in modern poetic history.
