Study on the Water Purification Properties of Volcanic Ash Blocks with Beneficial Microorganisms

In this study, the development of eco-friendly water purification blocks utilizing Baekdu volcanic ash was investigated as a preliminary approach. Engineering and microstructural analyses based on the material properties of Baekdu volcanic ash were conducted to evaluate the water purification capabilities of the blocks, depending on the mixing methods with beneficial microorganisms. DF35, a beneficial microorganism immobilized in the volcanic ash blocks, maintained high activity under cultivation conditions involving shaking with block fragments in TSA medium. The volcanic ash blocks effectively suppressed biological contaminants, demonstrating sufficient water purification performance. This study is expected to provide fundamental data for the management of volcanic ejecta during Baekdu eruptions and for the application of volcanic ash in various eco-friendly structures. Continuous research considering field conditions is deemed necessary for future applications.
