미국 인종담론과 패싱 담론의 변화 연구

초록

This paper aims to explore history and spectrum of racial theories alongside the history of ‘passing,’ designating phenomena where half-blooded people ‘pass’ as white, in social space and literature. As theoretical scaffoldings, the paper utilizes various racial theories including Michael Omi and Howard Winant’s theory of racial formation in the U.S. and Michel Foucault’s bio-politics to understand how the bodies of passing subjects comply with and deconstruct racial boundaries and white supremacy’s hegemonic domination in the U.S. history. First, the paper generally overviews the racial theories and their hegemonic and discursive background in the U.S. history focusing especially on their contextualization with ethnicity, nation, culture, and (post) colonialism. In turn, the paper explores and employs Michel Foucault’s theory of bio-poltics to understand ‘passing’ and its contexualization with ideologies of ‘skin color’ and ‘blood.’ Last, the paper pries into the current post-racism and its limits via investigating and critiquing Paul Gilory’s ideas of postracism and disaporic idealism.
