초록
The Newly Engraved Complete Illustration of The Classic of Mountains and Seas is a woodblock print artwork from the late Qing Dynasty in China, based on the Classic of Mountains and Seas. It is currently housed at SOAS University of London and holds significant academic value in the fields of art and culture due to its mythological themes and its status as “overseas Chinese cultural heritage”. This study adopts an iconographic research approach, using the Newly Engraved Complete Illustration of The Classic of Mountains and Seas as its primary object of analysis. First of all, through studying the official website of SOAS University of London and self-organizing, the basic overview of Newly Engraved Complete Illustration of The Classic of Mountains and Seas is made. Then, the composition elements and symbolic meaning of the picture are analyzed to explore the cultural connotation behind the image. The study then interprets the work within the context of Qing Dynasty history, social culture, and philosophical thought, delving into the ideological implications behind the imagery. Currently, research on the Newly Engraved Complete Illustration of The Classic of Mountains and Seas is relatively scarce, and official interpretations often contain misinterpretations. This paper aims to provide a more accurate description of the artwork by analyzing its images, exploring its cultural connotations, and deconstructing the underlying ideologies. It is hoped that this work will contribute academic insights into Chinese mythology and culture based on the Classic of Mountains and Seas, while encouraging more scholars to engage with the study of overseas Chinese cultural heritage and the unique cultural inheritance it represents.
