Survey on Recyclability of Take-out Cups in Korea

In this study, we analyzed the size, printed area, and composition of the laminate layer to provide basic data to establish manufacturing standards for promoting take-out paper cup recycling. As a result, it was confirmed that the take-out paper cups of 12, 13, 16 oz, weight 10~15 g, and basis weight 300~400 g/m2 were used the most. Take-out paper cups with more than 80% printing area accounted for about 25% of all paper cups, and polyethylene laminate paper cups accounted for 98% of all paper cups. In order to facilitate recycling of take-out paper cups, manufacturing standards must be established that limit excessive printed area and polyethylene lamination. © 2021 Korean Technical Assoc. of the Pulp and Paper Industry.
