Effect of Ca substitution on the superconducting properties of LuBa2Cu3Oz

We have investigated the effect of Ca substitution for Lu on the structural and the superconducting properties of (Lu1-xCax)Ba2Cu3Oz(0 <= x <= 0.5) samples. X-ray diffraction data reveal that, contrary to the Ca-free sample, the phase purity of the samples increases as the Ca content increases above x = 0.1 and that the solubility limit of Ca is about x = 0.2. Electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power measurements indicate that the suppressions of T-c by Ca substitution within the solubility limit are due to an increase in the concentration of mobile holes.
