Effects of dietary vitamins and trace minerals on growth and carcass quality in pigs

Many factors are involved in the requirements of vitamins and trace minerals (Vit-TM) in pig diets such as genotype, nutrient interrelationship, environmental condition, etc. Efforts were made to improve bioavailabilities of some trace minerals (i.e., Cu, Zn and Cr) through chelation with organic materials, but the efficacies of the chelated minerals are inconsistent. Phytic acid is able to form insoluble phytate-mineral complexes with divalent and trivalent cations, thus microbial phytase supplementation in diets improves digestibility of some trace minerals (i.e., copper and zinc). Recent researches showed that removing Vit-TM premixes from diets during late finishing period had no effect on ADG or gain/feed, while others suggested to add higher levels of vitamins and trace minerals than the estimated requirements of NRC (1998) to improve growth performance and pork quality in growing-finishing pigs.
