The power curve of a wind turbine relates the power output of the wind turbine and the wind speed. The power output of a wind turbine is proportional to the air density and the cubic of the wind speed. To get a reliable power curve, it is essential to measure and analyze the wind velocity accurately. Wind velocity is a very irregular turbulent vector property expressed by both its speed and direction. The power output of a wind turbine is greatly influenced by wind turbulence. Therefore, the characteristics of wind velocity turbulence is very important. In this study, the influence of wind velocity turbulence on the power output is investigated over different velocity regimes. The wind velocity turbulence expressed as turbulent intensity is divided into wind speed turbulence and wind direction turbulence, and their effects on the wind turbine power output are investigated. As a result, it is found that higher turbulence intensity is better for power output in low wind speed regime near the cut-in speed. This is also true for the annual energy production. However, smaller turbulence intensity is found to be more desirable in economically valuable velocity regime as expected. It is also found that the power output of the wind turbine is influenced, more by wind speed turbulence in low wind speed regime near the cut-in speed, but more by wind direction turbulence in high wind speed regime.
