A Study on the Self-Identity of North Korean Defectors in Humanitarian Writing Materials

The purpose of this paper is to explore identity issues of North Korean defectors represented in the writing materials of humanities therapy sessions for North Korean defectors that put emphasis on the concept and components of self-identity. In Chapter 2, the concept and components of self-identity will be examined and in Chapter 3, how self-identity is represented in the writing materials will be reviewed, with the concept and components of self-identity combined. In this paper, two cases of A and B will be examined. A's prominent feature is that A recognizes herself as a subjective one in order to perform her roles well as a member of her new society(South Korea). Her willingness to overcome the nostalgia for a home country and hardships that she suffers is firm and strong enough to show positive outlook. The prominent feature of B is that she firmly has an idea that adapting herself into a new society is a prerequisite for subjective leadings of her life in South Korea. In addition, she interprets what she suffers positively, perceives the reality of other defectors' maladjustments, and experiences difficulties in adapting to South Korean society.
