Factors influencing dental fear in adolescents

This study is intended to provide basic data for oral health promotion of Korean adolescents by identifying the level of their dental fears and determining the factors influencing them. As a representative sample of the target population, 286 middle school students were enrolled for survey. Past experience of pain and time burden and travel inconvenience showed significant positive correlations with dental fear. Designated clinic showed a significant negative correlation with dental fear. The factors influencing the subjects’ dental fears were designated clinic (ß=-4.53, p=.000) and direct experience of pain (ß=-.34, p=.000). On the basis of the findings of this study, future research will have to focus on exploring a standardized manual or method for minimizing fears and anxieties of adolescents so that more comfortable and efficient oral care can be achieved. © Research India Publications.
