Is contrastive implicature induced by Korean CT-marking -(n)un conventional or conversational?

초록

Kim, Ilkyu. 2018. Is contrastive implicature induced by Korean CT-marking -(n)un conventional or conversational Korean Journal of Linguistics, 43-2, 225-249. Although previous works have put much effort on figuring out the exact meaning of contrastive topic (CT), it has rarely been seriously investigated whether the contrastive implicature generated by CT is conventional or conversational. Particularly, the contrastive implicature induced by Korean CT-marking -(n)un is widely known to be conventional mainly due to the special prosody attached to the particle and alleged noncancellability of the implicature. The purpose of this paper is to show that the contrastive implicature induced by -(n)un, contra the standard view, is not conventional but conversational. This will be done by showing that 1) what is known as contrastive implicature of Korean CT arises only in certain contexts, and 2) the traditional criteria for distinguishing between conventional and conversational implicatures all lead to the conclusion that the contrastive implicature is conversational.
