Effects of diet form and xylanase supplementation in a high maize distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) diet on performance, nutrient digestibility and non-starch polysaccharide degradation in broiler

The present study investigated the effects of feed form and xylanase supplementation on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and the degradation of non-starch polysaccharides, caecal digesta volatile fatty acids (VFAs) concentration in broilers fed a maize-soybean meal-based diet containing 20% maize DDGS. A total of 480 broilers (Ross 308; average BW 483 +/- 3.14 g) were randomly allotted to 4 treatments on the basis of BW. There were 6 replicates in each treatment with 20 birds per replicate. Birds were fed on two different feed forms (mash or pellets) and 0 or 6000 U of xylanase in a 2 x 2 factorial design. Pellets fed birds showed increased (P<0.05) BW gain and feed intake. The xylanase inclusion improved BW gain and FCR (P<0.05). There was an interaction between diet form and xylanase supplementation on feed intake (P<0.05). Pellet fed birds showed an improved ileal digestibility of GE (P<0.05). The inclusion of xylanase improved ileal digestibility of soluble and insoluble NSP and increased total nutrient utilisation of DM, GE. Pellet feeding and xylanase supplementation increased the concentrations of arabinose in ileum (P<0.05). Xylanase addition reduced the ileal viscosity and acetic acid concentration increased (P<0.05). These results indicated that pellet form in broiler diets had the potential to improve BW gain and feed intake. In addition, xylanase supplementation in broiler diets may improve BW gain and nutrient digestibility.
