성별에 따른 은유 표현의 인식 방법: 제 2외국어로서 영어 학습자의 ‘읽기 수업’을 중심으로

초록

This study aims to examine how Korean English readers (L2) of different undergraduate majors perceive metaphor of time and metaphoric expressions by gender. Based on Baker (1997) and West and Fenstermaker's (2002) 'Membership Categorization Analysis' model, this paper has investigated some cases of L2 leaners' judgement for the metaphoric expressions. In particular, 248 students' perception of contextual metaphor in their reading texts or assignments is examined in depth, and metaphorical expressions are indeed recognized from their classes or member categories. It means that students’ background, membership, as well as their gender, affect the L2 readers' perception of metaphor. To capture the findings, this paper proposes a new explanation for the rhetorical languages that derive from the Korean L2 readers' background and their classes or membership categories in reading classes. We argue that this new model, in fact, can provide the students with more resonable grounds for understanding the contextual metaphor.
