Letters Between Two is a collection of Lu Xun's correspondencewith Xu Guangping. Lu Xun was an advocate of the modern valuessuch as free love, but he must have felt challenging in publishinghis love letters and thus putting them on the public stage. Thisarticle focuses on this "dilemma" and explores the factors whichforced and fostered Lu Xun to publish his love letters. First, I examine his financially impoverished condition. Lu Xunhad to give up his college professorship after he developed hisrelationship with Xu Guangping. The outbreak of the ShanghaiIncident and the subsequent dissolution of the literary circlesprevented Lu Xun from living on the royalties from his books. Asa result, he had a hard time supporting his family both inShanghai and Beijing. The collection of love letters could thusfigure out financial difficulties. Next, I note the social and political censorship addressed in thepreface. Lu Xun learned of the death of Wei Suyuan and wasreminded of having once burned up all the correspondence with acquaintances. The most disastrous development for theintellectuals, Lu Xun thought, is being taken advantage ofposthumously by the idle men; thus, written records had to beencouraged and preserved for the purpose of inscribing theundeniable truth as the censorship intensified its control oversociety. Ironically, the publication of Letters Between Two came tobe made thanks to the social and political censorship. Lu Xun's motives for publishing his love letters illuminate therelationship between the modern author and the fate of modernwriting. The writers were supposed to experience the moments ofsacrificing their privacy. Lu Xun wanted to do away with all kindsof gossips, which appears had worked out. Meanwhile, the modernwriting always accompanied the freedom of literature. The reasonfor considering the freedom of literature as an ideology is becausethe modern writing began with the censorship such as thepublication law. The case of Lu Xun explains that the modernwriting was made possible only through the struggle with thecensorship.
