We consider a two-stage queue and N-policy for the switching mechanism of a server. A two-stage queue consists of an individual mode service in the first stage and a batch mode service in the second stage, by a single server. We present the steady-state system size distribution, the mean cycle lengths when the switching server stays at the first stage and the second stage, respectively, and the average cost. We consider the holding cost, the switching cost, and the individual and batch service costs. Finally, some numerical examples are presented. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
