Family Life and Cultural Encounter of Foreign Wives in Rural Area

초록

increased since 1990s. Foreign wives and their children challenge to the conventional concept of ‘nation’and ‘ethnic group’in Korea. They are different from migrant workers and other temporary foreign residents because they can be naturalized and become Korean nationals. Previous researches and reports by NGO activists focus on the human rights issue of foreign wives of transnational marriage couples. However, this paper emphasizes the importance and necessity of the alternative perspective focusing on their experiences of cultural adaptation and conflicts. The analysis of this paper illustrates different position of Korean husbands and their relatives. They do not realize the necessity of learning wives’ foreign culture as a husband and family members. They ask the foreign wives to learn Korean culture. It is only wives’ burden to learn language and culture. This research illustrates how these different attitudes and practices bring up conflicts in the transnational marriage couples and their relatives.
