The Effect of Parental Joblessness on Juvenile Delinquency

초록

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of parental joblessness on juvenile delinquency and to investigate its underlying mechanism. Design/methodology/approach - Parental joblessness can increase the likelihood of juvenile delinquency by causing financial and mental stress, or it can decrease the likelihood of delinquency by motivating children to succeed. Moreover, given the different roles of fathers and mothers in the household, the impact of father’s and mother’s joblessness may differ. This study uses Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018). A fixed effects model was used to control for unobservable individual time-invariant confounders in the estimation. Findings - Paternal joblessness reduces the likelihood of children committing delinquency, especially cyber delinquency. Analyzing the mechanism behind of these results, I found that when fathers lost their jobs, children were more likely to engage in career-related activities. No statistically significant effect was found for maternal joblessness. Research implications or Originality - These results suggest that juvenile delinquency can be reduced by educating children to accurately recognize the negative consequences of delinquency.
