주제 지속성에 따른 무거운 명사구 전이 (Heavy NP Shift) 구문의 담화 기능

초록

This paper explores discourse functions of English Heavy NP Shift Construction (henceforth HNPS). According to the data in the previous studies, the function of HNPS has been assumed to be sentence focus, or new entity of sentence. Focusing on the 'topic progression' in written discourses, we investigate the function of HNPS related with the discourse topic progression. It is actively acquiring new functions in discourse, e.g. topic elaboration. This paper examines various types of text and its variants that evolve from this peculiar function, and argues that such functional shift is a result of informational status, location on discourse, whole discourse processing and connections of the postverbal NPs.
