Evolving Landscape of Terrorism in Indonesia: Emergence of Online Spaces and Lone Wolf Terrorism

초록

This article seeks to elucidate the role of cyberspace in the evolution and dissemination of religious ideas in general, and terrorism in particular, in Indonesia. It begins by examining how Muslim religious activities have transitioned into cyberspace, emphasizing the significance of digital environments as platforms for religious engagement and their potential to foster terrorist ideologies. Subsequently, the discussion turns to how these online platforms have influenced terrorist activities in Indonesia, focusing on the recent rise in lone-wolf attacks and exploring how digital activities enable unaffiliated individuals to engage in terrorism. The article also compares the operational methods of autonomous, lone wolf-style terrorism with traditional, organized terrorism. Through this analysis, the paper posits that the emergence of cyberspace has prompted the shift of Islamic terrorism from organized groups to individual, decentralized attacks.
