초록
The purpose of this study was to examine the developmental trends in Korean middle schoolers' attitude toward reading. Especially, it investigated how their grades and gender have an influence on their reading attitude development. For it, 1354 first-to-third middle schoolers were participated in the study and Noh's Reading Attitude Inventory was used for the data collection. Results from the study showed a negative trend in middle schoolers' attitude toward reading as they pass through their grades. Regarding gender effect on their reading attitude, results indicated that girls as a group possess more positive attitude than boys at all grade levels. A gap between boys and girls in reading attitude was growing bigger. Implication for reading educators seem clear. Effective intervention, including better reading instruction, literacy environment, and time to read, may curb the attitude decline. Also, further study should be performed to investigate whether their reading achievement and reading instruction affect their attitude toward reading.
