潭樵 南永魯의 생애와 『玉樓夢』에 반영된 사유

초록

Coming from an insignificant family, one of the Joseon literati Nam Yeong-no left a significant legacy in literary history with the writing of Ongnumong (The Dream of Jade Tower). There is very little record life of him, hence, it is almost impossible to retrace the course of his life or his literary thoughts. It seems that Nam Yeong-no obtained his cultural nourishment from the friendships he shared with many writers or artists around him. After failing civil service exam several times, he lived in seclusion and wrote Ongnumong using his literary talent. He often communicated with other literati and they sometimes read and critiqued one another's works. He showed the world his literary talents while communicating with fiction writers such as Seo Yu-yeong, Gim So-haeng, Sim Neung-suk and poets of Samhodang Poetry Group such as Seo Don-bo and Seo Gi-bo. Ongnumong succeeded the narrative structure of Guunmong (The Cloud Dream of the Nine) which is a typical dream-vision novel and covered extensive range of writing style from the domestic novel to romance novel, and to war hero story which became popular among the later generations . It means that Ongnumong had the strongest popular appeal of the nineteenth century novel. What Ongnumong accomplished in the late Joseon can be seen as something great. It has reached a level that other work can hardly compare in its high level of understanding about women, sharp criticism on political disputes, and the detailed description of diverse popular cultures including the contemporary entertainments.
