The effect of ball milling on the transformation of Al(OH)<inf>3</inf> (gibbsite) to γ-alumina was studied. The transformation temperature decreases from 1250 °C before milling to about 1000 °C after milling for 8 hours, indicating that the pretreatment of Al(OH)<inf>3</inf> by milling significantly enhances α-alumina formation. Even at a temperature 175 °C below that for the as-received gibbsite powders, the isothermal transformation kinetics of the ball-milled powders are still faster.
