Chaotic Electron Motion in a Free-Electron Laser with a Two-Frequency Wiggler

In the high-power free-electron laser, we investigate the nonlinear beam dynamics of an electron in a two-frequency wiggler magnetic field to enhance the stability of the electron beam. The electron motion in a two-frequency wiggler is examined for the expanded Hamiltonian, and the equations of motion are derived from the Hamiltonian, which includes a two-frequency wiggler magnetic field. To optimize the two-frequency ratio parameter, we study the instability and chaotic phenomena of electron beams by using a time series analysis, a fast Fourier transformation, the Poincare surface of section, and the maximal Lyapunov exponent.
