This paper reports the extent to which poetry can be used for EFL instruction by examining its dual organization of forms and content. As language is embodied by the production of speech sounds and its meaning interpretation, the extrinsic and intrinsic aspects of poetry are suggested to be brought into the teaching of phonological elements and metacognitive reading skills respectively. Such a binary approach is based on the notion that the conventional forms of poetry may be linked with aesthetic appeals supported by their rhythmical features, and the ideational contents of poetry with the interpretation of the poet’s intended messages often appearing to be fuzzy. Accordingly, the generic values and variables embedded in poetry may be associated with its forms and contents in EFL education.
