Infective Endocarditis Caused by Streptococcus dysgalactiae in a Korean Wild Raccoon Dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides koreensis)

This case report describes the clinical and pathological findings of a rescued wild raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides koreensis) diagnosed with sarcoptic mange and infective endocarditis. Thoracic radiography revealed right atrial enlargement, and echocardiography identified vegetative lesions on the mitral valve, consistent with endocarditis. Postmortem examination revealed marked valvular thickening and friable vegetative lesions affecting the aortic and mitral valves. Streptococcus dysgalactiae was isolated from the mitral valve and pericardial fluid, suggesting the potential link between severe sarcoptic mange-associated skin barrier compromise and bacterial endocardial infection. This case highlights the potential role of cardiovascular assessment in wildlife diagnostics and emphasizes the need for early recognition and intervention in systemic infectious diseases. © The Korean Society of Veterinary Clinics.
