Green concrete specification and sustainable technologies

This technical paper introduces the 'Green concrete specification' of KCI. The specification is in the draft stage and needs to be announced in the near future. The key concept of the Green concrete specification includes the 'Environmental management and green construction plan' submitted by the contractor to the client at the beginning of concrete construction in the following four areas: (1) reduction of GHG emission and energy consumption, (2) effective use of resources, (3) environmental management of construction site and neighbourhood, and (4) water management. Life cycle concept by ISO 14000 series is partially adopted including the use of materials with EPD and carbon footprint, and recommendation of products manufactured from facilities with ISO 14001 certification. In the second half of this paper, some recent sustainable technologies in Korea, related to the proposed Green concrete specification such as new cement standards, standards on recycled aggregates, CO<inf>2</inf> base design are introduced.
