This study examined the impact of different Lightemitting diode (LED) light sources (blue, red, green, and white) on the antioxidant activity and secondary metabolite composition of Oplopanax elatus. The results demonstrated that blue LED treatment significantly enhanced antioxidant activity, with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity reaching 87.31% and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) scavenging activity reaching 78.41%, both of which were marked higher than those observed under fluorescent light. Additionally, blue LED increased total phenol (60.76 mgGAE/g) and flavonoid content (9.33 mgQE/g), approximately four times higher than the control. In contrast, red and white LEDs were most effective in increasing triterpenoid compounds, with red LED yielding the highest lupeol content (95.24 μg/mL) and white LED significantly enhancing betulin accumulation (73.30 μg/mL). These findings suggest that O. elatus grown under LED light conditions is more effective in terms of antioxidant activity and secondary metabolite production than those grown under fluorescent light. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the impact of LED light on O. elatus, providing new insights into the application of artificial light sources for medicinal plant cultivation. © The Korean Society for Applied Biological Chemistry 2025.
