On In-whan Park’s<America’s Selected Poetry>

초록

This article explores the characteristics of In-whan Park’s America’s Selected Poetry represented by 12 poems. These poems deal with poet’s experiences of traveling a big city in America, but we can find the effort of searching for Korean’s identity more than his mere sightseeing about traveling. When the poet experienced the civilization of the city, he must have felt multiple complex about America as well as criticizing civilization of America. The focus I emphasize in this article is his ambivalent attitude toward American civilization. The discre- pancy between the reality he saw in America and his existence made his consciousness suffer the disorder of identity. I can find ambivalent images in his America’s Selected Poetry represented by 12 poems, which are disappointment, frustration, a sense of estrangement but some admiration in his mind. The previous study on In-whan Park’s America’s Selected Poetry has focused on the negative aspects of America civiliza- tion, and the absence of awareness of reality in his poetry, but this article reveals the unifying images of his conflict reality of two civilization, which make his poetry great, I think.
