Effects of alkali-cosolvent swelling pretreatment on grinding properties of BKP

In this study, the effects of alkali-cosolvent swelling pretreatment on grinding characteristics of hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HwBKP) fibers was investigated. Dimetyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was applied as a cosolvent. It was found that alkali swelling pretreatment decreased the grinding efficiency of HwBKP compared with non-treated pulp. The addition of DMSO cosolvent (H<inf>2</inf>O-DMSO solvents) further decreased the grinding efficiency. Comparing at a given specific energy consumption, the non-swelling fiber showed the highest slurry viscosity and WRV of MFC, followed by the NaOH swelling fibers in H<inf>2</inf>O solvent and the NaOH swelling fibers in H<inf>2</inf>O-DMSO solvents. It was speculated that damping of grinding efficiency by alkali swelling was caused by the reduction of acidic group in fibers due to the loss of hemicellulose and cellulose with low molecular weights including β- and γ-celluloses.
