A Study on the Polysemous Meanings of Get in Get-constructions within Prototype Theory

초록

This study examines the polysemous lexical categories of the verb get in get-constructions from a cognitive-semantic point of view, focusing on the meaning relatedness to polysemous categories. Based on the family resemblance approach and prototype theory, this study aims to demonstrate that the diverse meanings of the verb get are schematically related to what we call meaning chains, semantic network and metaphorical extensions. In this study, it is proposed that based on the corpus evidence and historical origins in many literary works, the lexical meaning obtain is considered to be the prototypical meaning of the verb get. Because the predominant semantic feature of the verb get describes the relationship between the single subject as an agent and the single object as a patient in the monotransitive event, it prototypically means 'for someone to receive something'. The prototypical meaning 'obtain' of is extended and chained into polysemy (motion, causation, permission, obligation, ingressive, inchoative, passive) with respect to the gradation of the degree of semantic parameters such as transitivity, agentivity and volition. These extended meanings are expanded again and networked together by metaphorical features such as abstractness, lexicality, concreteness and prototypicality. Prototype theory and family resemblance theory through these semantic features play a decisive role in determining the fuzziness and gradualness in categorization that cannot be explained by the classical theory. In other words, a variety of meaning categories, the verb get cannot be divided with clear boundaries. There is a prototypical one among diverse meanings of the verb get. It is gradually extended to polysemy from the most prototypical one to the least prototypical one. This explains why the categories' boundaries are fuzzy. As a result, the get-constructions with the verb get seem to be externally separated but they are internally related one another. Finally, it is suggested that the polysemous meanings of a word are deeply related to themselves in terms of the semantic meaning network and metaphorical extensions.
