Impact of Casino Gambling on Crime Rate of Jeongseon Community: In Case of Official Statistics of Police Agency * Professor, Department of Sociology, Kangwon National University, Ph.D. in Sociology. Lee, Tai-Won* In Korea, despite the proliferation of patrons and pathological gamblers of casino, any study does not investigate a link between casino gambling and the change of crime rate in the community where casino is located. Literature regarding criminological theories and empirical tests on the relationship between two bring about the contradictory results in western society. The purpose of this article is to empirically test wether the crime rate of Jungson community has been increased or not in comparison with before/after the opening of casino gambling during the 8 years. Official Crime Statistics of Kangwon Police Agency is used to test the difference of the frequency and rate of crimes between before and after the opening of casino. Results show that the opening of casino gambling increased crime frequencies and crime rate of the community. Especially larceny, violent crime( except serious crimes such as homocide, rape, robbery and arson), intellectual crimes and crimes against public morals, which are related with casino gambling, increased in numbers and rate of crimes after opening of the casino. In case of crime rate, larcenies show the 70% increase, violent crimes show the 30% increase, intellectual crimes show the 90% increase, crimes against public morals show the 30% increase and total crimes show the 30% increase in comparison with before/after the opening of casino.
