To examine which mode (concentric or eccentric) and velocity of muscle contraction had the closest relationship with maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), non-athletic normal adults' (102 male and 119 female) isokinetic concentric and eccentric knee extensor peak torques at angular velocities of 30, 60 and 180 degrees per second were measured. VO2max was determined by cardiopulmonary exercise tests with simultaneous respiratory gas analyses. We compared the correlation coefficients between various peak torques and VO2max. Positive correlations were demonstrated between either concentric or eccentric peak torques and VO2max. The correlation coefficients of the concentric peak torques and VO2max were greater than those of the eccentric peak torques and VO2max (p<0.05 by t-statistics). There was a tendency that the concentric peak torques at the highest angular velocity (180 degrees per second) had a closer relationship with the VO2max than those of the two slower angular velocities but statistically it was not significant.
