초록

On the assumption that, in the contemporary society that emphasizes external body type, dancers’ restrained eating and eating disorder would have an effect on their self‐esteem, the present study surveyed 225 university dancers in order to analyze their psychological state caused by restrained eating and eating disorder and to provide basic data for health management. From the results of this study were drawn conclusions as follows. First, significant correlation was observed between dancers’ restrained eating and eating disorder, and between their eating disorder and negative self‐esteem. Second, dancers’ restrained eating was found to be a variable explaining 16.6% of their eating disorder. Third, dancers’ restrained eating was found not to have a significant effect on their self‐esteem. Fourth, the sub‐factors of dancers’ eating disorder self‐abasement and anorexia nervosa were found to be variables explaining 44.8% of the dancers’ negative self‐esteem. Dancers’ restrained eating and eating disorder, which are inevitable for maintaining their body type, were affecting their self‐esteem negatively in a vicious cycle. As dancers’ negative self‐esteem may develop into emotional problems such as lack of confidence in front of audience and others and stage anxiety, there should be scientific guidelines for dancers’ body type management and eating habits.
