초록
This study focused on identifying the planting structure and carbon sequestration and oxygen production of urban parks of Chuncheon in Korea. In particular, the carbon sequestration, storage, and oxygen production of trees planted in urban parks were estimated through field surveys of the planting structures. The tree density, tree cover, and average stem diameter at breast height in the urban parks in Chuncheon were estimated to be 4.2 trees/100 ㎡, 42.6%, and 16.2 cm, respectively. Further, the carbon sequestration, storage, and oxygen production per park area in the study parks were measured to be 2.4 t/ha/yr, 24.4 t/ha, and 6.5 t/ha/yr, respectively. Based on estimations from these carbon reduction and oxygen production units, Chuncheon City's urban parks offset approximately 3.9% of carbon emissions from public electricity consumption each year and played a vital role in producing oxygen for the respiration of around 9200 individuals. Moreover, crown cover, size, and the species of trees planted were the main factors determining the relative levels of carbon sequestration and oxygen production in study parks. To enhance the carbon reduction and oxygen production capacities of urban parks, it is necessary to convert potential planting spaces and existing unnecessary grass into multilayered planting spaces. In addition, it is recommended to plant tree species with good annual growth rates and carbon sequestration capacities, and to utilize large-sized trees instead of small-sized trees.
