To achieve dramatic functional diversity and overwhelming efficiency in real surface/interface applications, Au-embedded SnO2 nanostructures were synthesised by imparting structural/compositional changes to meet certain needs within seconds. This differs from conventional Au-adsorbed SnO2, which creates only two layers of a heterostructure and one contact interface. In contrast, similar to a peapod structure, it has a unique configuration with two layers of heterostructures, in this case oxygen-deficient SnO2/Au/SnO2, and two contact interfaces. As this is based on a facile process technique, the most likely synthetic models have been proposed. Here, gas sensing is used to explain how such a small change in the nanostructure would appear. The competitive feature is the synergistic effect, which can handle necessary surface energy increases by nano-thin films and compositional changes as well as the existing Au spill-over phenomenon. Therefore, the step-by-step know-how obtained via spin-offs will represent an excellent stimulus for future nanostructure transformation studies.
