LiCoO2/Ag multilayer film cathodes for thin-film rechargeable lithium batteries

Multilayer films of LiCoO2/ Ag/ LiCoO2/ Ag/ LiCoO2 structure were prepared by a magnetron sputtering without postannealing. The as-deposited films exhibited (101) and (104) preferred orientation and had a nanocrystalline structure similar to that of LiCoO2 single layer films. Electrochemical performances of the LiCoO2/Ag multilayer films and a LiCoO2 single layer film were investigated at a current density ranging from 30 to 1000 mu A/cm(2), in which the total thickness of LiCoO2 layer was similar to 3.9 mu m. It appears that the rate capability of the LiCoO2/ Ag multilayer films strongly depends on the thickness of the Ag layer. The rate capability was enhanced with increasing thickness of the Ag layer. The enhanced rate capability in the LiCoO2/ Ag multilayer films is mainly ascribed to the increase of the electronic conductivity. (c) 2006 The Electrochemical Society.
