An experimental study on the nature of the relative clause constraint in Korean.

초록

Kim, Ilkyu & Ji, Yunjoo. 2020. An experimental study on the nature of the relative clause constraint in Korean. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 45-4, 777-796. This paper aims to understand the nature of the relative clause constraint effect in Korean, by conducting an acceptability judgment experiment. The two independent variables used in the experiment are 1) the Characterization Constraint (CC) (Kim 2013) and 2) frame, or conventional general knowledge. The results show that a certain type of Korean double relative clause constructions, although violating the relative clause constraint, can be as acceptable as typical relative clause constructions if they conform to the CC and are interpretable using frames. Based on the results, we suggest that the nature of the relative clause constraint effect in Korean is semantico-pragmatic rather than syntactic.
