A new type of mountain railway system (Korean Mountain railway) has been developed. Instead of construction of new railroads in the mountain, this Korean mountain railway system uses existing vehicle roads to minimize environmental damage. Thus, the embedded track system is adopted for mixed car and train operation. Also, railroad frequently meets steep gradients and sharp curves. Plane and vertical curve specifications for ordinary train must be checked for use in this new mountain railway system, because the curves in car roads are different from those for trains. In this paper, alignment design criteria for car roads and railways were analyzed first. Then, design specifications for Korean mountain railroad alignment were proposed considering Korean mountain train properties and car road details in mountainous areas. © 2018 The Korean Society for Railway.
