Emergence of Islamic Neo-Modernism and Reactions: Cases of Muhammadiyah in Indonesia

초록

Emergence of Islamic Neo-Modernism and Reactions: Cases of Muhammadiyah in Indonesia Kim, Hyung-Jun* * Associate Professor, Department of Cultural Anthropology, Kanwon National University Since the fall of the Suharto regime, two contrasting voices have come to the fore in Indonesian Islam. Radical and Militant Muslims, being grouped under open organizations, have voiced their dissatisfactions at and have taken actions against what they believe to be anti-Islamic in national and international arenas. The so-called 'neo-modernism' or liberalism has also begun to put forward pluralistic perspectives in public, challenging what have been taken for granted by traditional and conservative Muslims. Muhammadiyah as an organization has distanced itself from the controversy, although the influences of neo-modernism have been present among its members. When the young 'turks' of Muhammadiyah founded an informal group called Network of Young Intellectuals Muhammadiyah (JIMM) in 2003, the situation changed and hard reactions against them have come to the fore. The purpose of this paper is to examine pluralistic interpretations of Islam in Muhammadiyah, characteristics of the activists of JIMM, and reactions of established Muhammadiyah members to neo-modernism. As Muhammadiyah has long been considered as a modernist organization, this study can give glimpse at relations between Islamic modernism and Islamic neo-modernism, the processes by which the global discourses of religious pluralism impact on Indonesian Muslims and the possibility of the expansion of neo-modernism among followers of Muhammadiyah.
