Recently, 3DTV and displays have been released so that 3D contents can be viewed at home. To watch stereoscopic images, 3D contents being composed of left and right images must be produced and delivered. In recent years, an image processing method to improve perceived depth of stereoscopic images by post-processing of left and right images has gained much attraction. This paper proposes a post-processing method to improve 3D effects. The depth or disparity map needed to this processing is obtained by stereo matching. Then, the depth map is utilized to transform RGB colors. For this, two schemes are proposed: contrast transformation and background darkening. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified through subjective experiments. © 2013 ICIC International.
