Production of Silicon Nanoparticles Using Coal Material Mined in Samcheok City

The importance of carbon neutrality has been increasing worldwide, leading to a rapid transition to eco-friendly energy sources. As a result, there is an explosive demand for high-capacity rechargeable batteries. Li-ion batteries with silicon-containing anode, which have a nanostructure, are being developed as they have a higher charge storage density than graphite anode. However, the production cost of silicon nanoparticles is critical huddle for commercialization. In this study, silicon nanoparticles were synthesized using low-cost silicon precursor silica and various carbon materials. Carbon black, graphite, and coal which was mined in Samcheok city were tested for carbon materials. When a laser beam of 1 kW was radiated onto powders mixed with silica and carbon material, silicon nanoparticles with a size range of 10 -120 nm were produced. The characteristics of the synthesized nanoparticles were examined using SEM, XRD, and XRF, confirming the presence of crystalline silicon in all powders. The experimental results using coal-mixed powder showed the highest silicon content and productivity among all the materials.
