A Study of Viewing Sequence and Pictorial Narrative in An Jian’s Dreaming of the Peach Garden

초록

“Dreaming of Peach Blossom Garden” by An Jian is the earliest painting of the Joseon Dynasty that depicts the theme of ‘Peach Blossom Garden’, which not only reflects the cross-cultural acceptance and localization of Tao Yuanming’s ‘The Record of Peach Blossom Garden’ of the Jin Dynasty in China by the literati of the Joseon Dynasty, but also demonstrates the unique structural mechanism and viewing rhythm of the hand scroll as a medium of visual narration. Unlike the traditional Chinese “Peach Blossom Garden Picture”which follows the linear structure of “searching-entering-exiting”, “Dreaming of Peach Blossom Garden Picture” presents the idealized Peach Blossom Garden scene from the right end of the picture, and then The entrance scene and the inscription of Anping Daijun are depicted later, constituting an inversion of the viewing order and narrative logic. Taking the image structure and viewing behavior as the starting point, this paper analyzes the construction of the “sleepwalking” imagery in the picture in the light of the emotional expression and positional arrangement of the inscription text, and explores the complex tension between ideals and realities, political ambitions and spiritual avoidance contained therein. By restoring the interactive relationship between the picture and the text, this paper tries to reveal how the scholarly class of the Joseon Dynasty gave new spiritual connotations to the imagery of “Peach Blossom” in the context of cultural fusion.
