초록
The political transition from authoritarianism toward democracy offered similar objective conditions for the rise and spread of anti-Americanism in the Philippines and Korea. However, the chronic economic stagnation of the former and the rapid economic growth of the latter provided different subjective conditions for the intensity and durability of anti-Americanism. As the dynamic political and economic development has led to the reorientation and redefinition of the national identity and interest of Korea, its anti-Americanism is far more likely to endure. The social discourse in Korea polarized into the two extremes of ‘extra-national (ROK-USA) collaboration’ and ‘intra-national (North-South) collaboration’ should be reviewed from the perspective of the peaceful management of national division and unification. While unconditional ‘extra-national collaboration’ will result in unilateral dependence on the USA instead of mutual interdependence, unconditional ‘intra-national collaboration’ in unilateral dependence on the North instead of reciprocal solidarity. In this transitional stage, thus, a creative combination of diverse strategic alternatives such as international coordination, regional cooperation, and national collaboration is essential for the North Korean question.
